Colonel Gray A. Johnson Jr., is the Chief of Staff for the Florida Army National Guard. He is TAG’s principal Army assistant for directing, coordinating, supervising, and training the FLARNG staff. He is responsible for the overall management of federal resources.
Colonel Johnson has served in a variety of command and staff positions with the FLARNG. Prior to assuming this position, he was the Assistant Chief of Staff – Signal (G6). Immediately before that, he served as the G38, Readiness Officer for the FLARNG.
Colonel Johnson has completed two tours in support of the Global War on Terror. The first was in 2002 in support of Operations Nobel Eagle and Enduring Freedom, and the second in 2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His other key assignments include Battalion Commander for the 146th Expeditionary Signal Battalion; Force Integration and Readiness Officer for the FLARNG; and Operations Officer (G3) for Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. He also served as an Assistant Professor for Military Science at Florida State University.
Colonel Johnson graduated from Florida State University in 1994 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Science Education and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. Colonel Johnson’s military education includes the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Signal Pre-Command Course, Mobilization Officer Course, and the ARNG Force Management Course. He also graduated from the U.S. Army War College in 2018.
Colonel Johnson’s awards include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the National Defense Service Medal (One Service Star), the Iraqi Campaign Medal with Two Campaign Stars, the Humanitarian Service Medal (2 Service Stars), the Army Commendation Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Florida Service Medal, the Florida Commendation Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.
